Favorite albums of 2020

If you've read my posts about my favorite albums of the year in years past, please excuse me because I am about to repeat myself. If you haven't read my posts about my favorite albums of the year in years past, please note before reading this that I base my favorites off of how much I have listened to them.  This is not a list of the best of the best albums from the last 12 months. Rather, this is simply some albums that were released this year that I have personally enjoyed listening to loudly, on repeat.

Despite the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic put an abrupt halt on all live music everywhere, stabbing a hole directly through the middle of my already dead heart, music itself did not die in 2020.

My #1 album of 2020 is still as shocking to me as it was the first day I heard it. I was shocked that I actually gave it a chance and listened to it because I have never been a fan of Halsey, not a fan of her music anyway. I am a fan of her style & her sass but her music was never been my cup of tea. That is of course until January 17th, 2020, the day that Manic was released. I couldn't tell ya exactly why I listened to it the very day it came out.

New music?

Curiosity?

Lured by the image of a glitter encrusted black-eye inspired, pouting Halsey on the cover?

Halsey, Manic album cover

Whatever it was that got me to take a chance and press play that day, I am happy that I did.

In 2018 the single "Without Me" off of her then un-known upcoming third album  dropped after her split from G-Eazy but time would prove that this is way more than a break up album. What I hear when I listen to Manic is an album of growth, self discovery and self recovery. It flourishes with a robust mix of painstaking emotions pumping through piano key melodies swimming in dreamy beats of high and low tempos across 16 tracks with sparkly synths and ballad worthy affirmations on most. Interludes of acoustic guitar cords spring up on some tracks including "You should be sad" Graveyard" and "929" evoking a folky juxtaposition while other songs songs like "wipe your tears" have heavy hip-hop undertones. All of the sound clip samples throughout it keep things fun and interesting, like the one before "killing boys".
It's Halsey's keen sense of lyrical poetry transcending the raw delicacy of navigating feelings that really does it for me though. It might be formulaic and over produced and just another pop album from a pretty face and I accept that.

I've smiled and danced, cried, sang, reflected and had an overwhelming sense of glee while listening to this album. The first time I heard the chorus of "Clementine", " I don't need anyone, I don't need anyone, I just need everyone and then some"  I thought, hey! That's me! Then when I heard "Finally//Beautiful Stranger" it cemented a revelation I had had at the end of 2019 and that's when I knew that I liked this album.

What's more surprising to me is not only did I listen to and fully enjoy this album but that it makes me feel my own uncomfortable vulnerability and I keep listening to it.

While "Clementine" and "Finally//Beautiful Stranger" are two of my top favorite songs from the album, "Ashley", "I HATE EVERYBODY" and "929" are also on the top of my list. There are lyrics in every one of these songs that make me say to myself, "hey, that's me!" and I'm willing to bet there are a lot of people who feel the same way. That's the beauty of music.

Run The Jewels, RTJ4 album cover

I had known about the June 5th release date of RTJ4 a few weeks ahead of time but there was no way of knowing what would unfold around the country leading up to that day. Our country's deeply rooted racist injustices boiled over on the heels of the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd by the hands of police officers. While people around the country sheltered in place we could no longer deny topics inherently pushed below the surface.

Racism.
White Supremacy.
Privilege.

We saw protests. We saw riots. We saw division as people witnessing the same moments in history continued to deny it's prevalence, afraid to let go of their own perceived power for the greater good of all while people like me could not turn a blind eye or deaf ear any longer.

As people rose up and spoke up, one of those people was Killer Mike. On June 1st he spoke at a press conference in his native Atlanta and two days later Run the Jewels dropped RTJ4 ahead of it's original June 5th release date. The first two singles "Yankee and the brave" and "Ooh la la" have catchy beats so it's no surprise that they're the first two songs on the album which starts with the line "back at it like a crack addict". Like their albums that came before it, Killer Mike and El-P rap about hard truths: police brutality, racial profiling, the ignorance of the history of slavery and racism in the U.S, segregation and the "war on drugs" just to name a few but this one hit different for obvious reasons.
All of the beats are different and unique from one song to the next on RTJ4. Some are more up beat than others, some are more heavy, some have more hooks than others, some are more rhythmic and they're all innovative in their own way.
Run The Jewels
has always told it like it is but I think more people were really tuned in and listening this time, I know I did.  RTJ4 is the soundtrack of the Summer 2020 BLM movement.
As different as all of the songs sound on RTJ4, they all come together and flow from one to the next seamlessly. My favorite transition comes right in the middle of the album from the funky fresh "holy calamafuck" into the one of my favorite tracks , "goonies vs. ET".
My #1 favorite track off of my second favorite album from 2020 is "JU$T" featuring Pharrell Williams and Zack De La Rocha.

Sylvan Essso, Free Love album cover

Free Love from Sylvan Esso came as a surprise. I didn't know they were working on new music until they teased us with a video clip from what would be the opening track "What If".

Unlike my first two favorite albums to come out this year, I believe that Free Love was created during quarantine, at least some of it.

It's Sylvan Esso's third album and it was released on September 25th, about 6 months into the pandemic and it couldn't have come at a better time. It has a gentle innocence that wraps around you like a hug from a friend  that we all desperately want but can't have. Their ability to layer and loop  without anything getting lost is ever abundant on their third album. With it's drops and switches and wind pipes (?) "Ferris Wheel" is a fun one that will make you want to get up and dance like so many Sylvan Esso songs do. I love "Rooftop Dancing", it is one of the best, if not the best song of 2020. It's slow but upbeat. It encompasses happiness and sadness in the same breath with the help of some what I think are xylophones and the loveliness that is Amelia's timeless voice. If you close your eyes while listening to it, can you see yourself dancing on a rooftop surrounded by your friends dancing on rooftops? Can you see people down below doing their best to survive this?
Can you see
babies double dutching,
singing their names,
counting off time,
doing their thing?

It makes you slow down and learn to appreciate everything around you just like this year has.

2020 has been a really tough year, thankfully there were new albums to help us through it and help to pass the time.

Making Spirits Bright: Big Freedia's Smokin' Santa Christmas

Brighten up your little COVID Christmas with Big Freedia's Smokin' Santa Christmas EP! Our favorite booty poppin' queen dropped the 5 song EP exactly two weeks before the "big" day. Smokin' Santa Christmas is Big Freedia's second Christmas EP to date following 2016's A Very Big Freedia Christmazz.

If COVID is making it a blue Christmas for you:

1. know that you are not alone, even if you are physically alone.
2. be nice to yourself & get a little naughty with Big Freedia, you already know!

My favorites are "Smoked Out Santa" & "Better Be" but any of these original holiday inspired songs from Big Freedia is sure to make any grinch smile.
Big Freedia's Smokin' Santa Christmas EP is the gift everyone didn't know they needed this Christmas.

Merry Twerkmas!

Cupcake fresh face mask from LUSH

What's not to love about LUSH cosmetics? Not only are all of their products handcrafted and animal cruelty free, LUSH also practices ethical buying and they only use recycled, reusable or compostable materials for all of their packaging. They also have a really great recycling incentive program: exchange 5 empty LUSH product pots/bottles and get a free fresh face mask. Plus the scent of handmade lotions, potions and bath bombs that float out of LUSH stores is intoxicating, how could you not love it?

After using the last of one of my favorite LUSH lotions I had 5 empty pots which is enough to claim a free fresh face mask. With the holidays right around the corner I decided to get my free gift while picking up a couple gifts from LUSH.

The first suggestion from the very pleasant and helpful sales associate was too exfoliating for me but her second suggestion was perfection! It was the cupcake fresh face mask! Though it doesn't necessarily have the skin firming qualities I was looking for (like those in RUMP, my favorite LUSH lotion which is now discontinued) the fresh mint aides in cooling irritation and inflammation while toning and retaining skin's moisture by tightening pores. So, yes please!

The rhassoul mud is a gentle cleanser good for troubled skin and coco powder leaves skin silky and smooth. All of the surgical, KN95 and cloth mask wearing this year has definitely taken a toll on my skin and this is a CUPCAKE face mask. I was sold.

The a fore mentioned very pleasant and helpful sales associate gave me a sample of Full of Grace Serum to apply before applying the cupcake fresh face mask.  It helps skin maintain it's elasticity, moisture and glow, more of the stuff I was looking for!

I couldn't wait to treat myself to the cupcake fresh face mask when I got home that night. I rubbed the piece of Full of Grace Serum bar all over my face, letting the butters melt right in before applying cupcake. This is a thick face mask, probably because of the rhassoul mud and I slathered on a healthy serving of it.

The scent is subtle and sweet with a tickle of refreshing mint and a satisfying sprinkle of coco, I couldn't help but think I was smearing frosting all over my face. Basking in the cupcake fresh face mask made me feel yummy all over. When I washed it off about 20 minutes later I couldn't believe how soft my face felt! There's about enough cupcake for four masks and for $9.95 a pop that is quite a steal and well worth it. For whatever kind of skin you have: oily, dry, troubled, irritated, the cupcake fresh face mask is the mask you should treat your face to.

Hurry, because it won't be around much longer. Get it as a gift for yourself and for someone else.

Merry Christmas from Dolly Parton & Phoebe Bridgers

Last Thursday was Thanksgiving, Friday was Black Friday, Saturday was small business Saturday, today is cyber Monday, tomorrow is giving Tuesday...but do you know what season it is?
It's Christmas music season.

The day after Thanksgiving is officially the unofficial day that it is socially acceptable to play Christmas music. Ready to rock around the Christmas tree in a Winter Wonderland  listening to Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas"  until December 25th?
Dolly Parton and Phoebe Bridgers have some new jingles to add to your Christmas mix this year.

Of the 51 studio albums that Dolly Parton has released since her 1967 debut, Hello, I'm Dolly, three of them are Christmas albums:
1984's Once Upon a Christmas (with Kenny Rodgers)
1990's Home for Christmas
2020's Holly Dolly Christmas

This year's Holly Dolly Christmas was released on October 2nd and it has 12 tracks (like the 12 days of Christmas!) including duets with Miley Cyrus, Willie Nelson, Michael Buble, Jimmy Fallon, Billy Rae Cyrus and Randy Parton.

Before she was a Grammy Award nominated artist for 'Best New Artist', 'Best Alternative Album' (Punisher), 'Best Rock Song' ("Kyoto") and 'Best Rock Performance' ("Kyoto"), Phoebe Bridgers dropped her yearly holiday song.

In holidays' past she's gifted us versions of "Silent Night" (2019), "Christmas Song" (2018) and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" (2017). This year she's given us the of the gift of a cover of the Merle Haggard song "If We Make It Through December".
It's not your typical quote unquote Christmas song but it sure is fitting for 2020.

Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake Cupcake from Frost Cupcake Factory

I've been to my share of bakeries and cupcakeries but Frost Cupcake Factory is the first cupcake factory I've been to.

When searching cupcake places in San Jose before a recent trip to the South Bay area, Frost was on the top of every list so it was an easy decision. I got there when they opened at 11am and was pleased to see they are carefully following COVID-19 compliance protocols for the safety of all of their costumers and staff: only one costumer is allowed inside at a time, paper towels are available outside to use to open the door and appropriate signage is up informing people a mask must be worn at all times inside.

The front of the small cupcake factory is covered in window decals celebrating the fact that Frost is a cupcake wars winner! Los Gatos local, Andrea Buswell and her Frost Cupcake Factory became the first Bay Area cupcake place to win Cupcake Wars in 2013.
We'd be proud and want everyone to know we won, too!

The front counter is filled with stacks of different cupcakes. The first thing I noticed was how much frosting is on all of the cupcakes.
The second thing I noticed was the scrumptious scent of freshly baked cupcakes.
Was I in heaven?
Frost offers different flavors everyday of the week, so I checked it out before I went and was happy to see that a Thanksgiving appropriate flavor was on the menu the day of my visit.

I was even more happy the day of when I walked in because the third thing I noticed was that they had the flavor I wanted! They actually had both of the flavors I wanted: Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake and Frostfetti. Go big or go home right? Well, I went big and I went home but I'm only reviewing one of those flavors.

The masked girl behind the counter boxed them up and I was in and out of there in less than 5 minutes flat.

Even though I noticed that the cupcakes from Frost have a lot of frosting on them I didn't realize quite how much frosting until I took the Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake cupcake out of the box. I've had some heavily frosted cupcakes in my day but Frost takes the cake. I love frosting, love it, can't get enough of it. If you do not like frosting, you've been warned!

Not only is there a lot of frosting on Frost cupcakes but the ratio of cake to frosting isn't typical. When I started unwrapping the cupcake from it's paper cup I noticed that it was "short", there was more frosting than there was cake! My dream cupcake! The bottom part of the cupcake was crumbly and that's when I quickly realized that this is a layered cupcake.

As one might guess, the cheesecake portion is the cream cheese frosting which is thick and dense, not very creamy.  It's a perfect mix of the subtle savory flavor of cream cheese with the subtle sweetness of buttercream frosting. The cake had a top layer of a buttery, moist pumpkin cake with just a hint of the popular Fall flavor and the bottom was a thin layer of graham cracker crust, just like the crust of a cheesecake. I thought that the caramel element was just the caramel drizzle on top but when I got to the middle of the Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake Cupcake there was a dollop of caramel hidden inside! It was a smooth caramel, not a sticky one, maybe a combo of caramel and caramel frosting? It was sweet and salty just like caramel.

I ate this cupcake slowly because it's a lot to take in and I wanted to fully enjoy every bite. While there is a lot going on with the Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake Cupcake, all of the flavors compliment each other really well. There's not too much of one or the other and they are all pretty subtle, so as a whole I didn't find it overwhelming. Since the flavor palette is a savory and sweet one, I didn't find this cupcake to be too sweet but I do have a huge sweet tooth.

With that said, it did satisfy my sweet tooth that night, so I waited to have the Frostfetti cupcake the following night (two cupcakes in one night is no big feat for me).

I haven't had it in years but Pumpkin Cheesecake is one of my favorite Thanksgiving desserts. It's a fun, fancy and yummy combo of two classics.

Pumpkin cupcakes are super popular this time of year.  Almost every cupcake place has some type of variation of a pumpkin cupcake and a lot of pumpkin cupcakes have cream cheese frosting.
Frost is the first place I've come across that calls the Pumpkin cake + cream cheese frosting combo Pumpkin Cheesecake, brilliant.
It's also the only place where I've seen a Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake cupcake on the menu. The caramel and the graham cracker "crust" really tie this cupcake flavor together in my opinion.

I am so thankful that I found Frost Cupcake Factory, went there on a Thursday and was able to try their Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake Cupcake. I think this might be my new favorite cupcake place. It's definitely the best pumpkin cupcake I've had!

The Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake Cupcake is available on Thursdays but I doubt that Frost is open on Thanksgiving Day. Their Pumpkin Spice cupcake is available on Wednesdays and Fridays if you're looking for a pre or post Thanksgiving treat.

Have a happy, healthy and yummy Thanksgiving!

Major Lazer @ Bayshore Drive-In 10/24/2020

Never say never cause here it is, a review of a live concert in The Bay Area after March 2020!

That's right. Last month the Burlingame Golf Range in Bayshore Park which is just a hop, skip and jump away from SFO, transformed into a drive-in, for shows. Think drive- in movie but music! The concert series was called Bayshore Drive-In and consisted of 9 show dates spanning three consecutive weekends from Thursday October 22nd through Saturday November 7th.

Thundercat kicked things off on opening night and though ticket sales/car pass sales were good I'm not sure if it was sold-out.

I am sure that after than night and the 70+ noise complaints that were made, the PA system was not used for any of the other shows. This meant that for the remaining shows, in true drive-in style, attendees had to tune in via their car radio.

Major Lazer was set to play The Bay Shore Drive-In on Saturday, October 24th as one of the first stops on their Drive-In tour after releasing their fourth album the day before on Friday October 23rd. They played two shows that day, an early show that started around 5:00pm and a late show that started around 9:00pm. I imagine that it was the early show that got added by popular demand after the late show sold-out and honestly it seemed like both shows were sold-out.

These were the first live shows in about 8 months since COVID-19 put everything on lockdown, including concerts, tours and music festivals. There is no doubt that everyone was stoked to be there. People packed into cars, some rented trucks, some drove convertibles, all eager to get parked in a spot for the show.

Some people dressed up in full raver gear: rave booty shorts, glitter/rhinestones/sparkles, festive hosiery and platform boots. Some people wore Halloween costumes.
Almost everyone wore a mask, a face mask you know the ones, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

There were different rules for every show at The Bayshore Drive-In: advertised as a concert from your car, it seemed that every night attendees were allowed to get out of their car to enjoy the show but they had to stay close to their car/parking spot and not mingle with the parties next them. Some people opted to back into their parking spot to watch the show from the back of their car or bed of their truck.

Some of shows allowed lawn chairs to be placed next to cars so people could enjoy the show that way. Other shows did not allow the use of lawn chairs. At the Major Lazer show a lot of people danced around their cars or on top of their cars. All attendees were suppose to wear a face mask at all times if /when out of their car, obviously. As it turns out, policing and enforcing that at an event with minimal staff to do it, is difficult.

It was the second stop of Major Lazer's Drive-In tour and their only Bay Area show(s) in 2020, clearly.   It's nice to know, as this concert series proved, that some things never change as most of the Bayshore Drive-In shows did not start at the scheduled start time but rather 15 to 30 minutes later in true "rock star" form. There were even a few people who grumbled about the delayed start times just like in pre-covid times, aww.

The now three piece that makes up Major Lazer were all there: Ape Drums, Walshy Fire and Diplo plus two female dancers and they were all juiced. They hit the stage with an explosive energy which paralleled the excitability pumping through the crowd. The trio hopped around the stage, hopped on and off  of the table that was set up for Dj-ing purposes. They danced and preformed on top of the table while the two female dancers held it down center stage.
The Major Lazer crew hyped up the crowd with shout outs and charismatic banter. The effort they put into engaging with the crowd almost made it feel like a pre-COVID show: fans ate it up every time it was served and Major Lazer kept dishing it out. .

People are always stoked to be at a show, right?  They like the music enough to buy a ticket and choose to spend their time there. They want to have a good time, it makes them happy. That's why they're there.
These shows hit different.

There were a couple of times when COVID compliancy slipped the minds of Major Lazer. For instance when they told the crowd to give the person next to them a high five and hug the people around them. It is easy to forget that we are still in a time of pandemic with a highly contagious infection virus, especially in the middle of having a good time but hopefully those simple, easily avoidable slip ups didn't happen at the other stops at on their Drive-In tour.

Most attendees could not see the stage, the PA wasn't blasting the dance hits and there wasn't crowd of sweaty happy people in front of the stage but none of that mattered. Major Lazer was vibing hard, giving fans what we've all been painfully missing for nearly 8 months, a show. A live show. The magic of music, that comradery amongst strangers that brings them together for one reason. That
reason being to have a shared good time experiencing music brought to life and that was ever present at these Major Lazer shows.

You could feel it.

I don't know about you but 8 months without going to a live show was excruciating.
I honestly didn't think it'd be back, albeit in a much different capacity, this soon. It was an eye-opening experience for what has to be done to bring live music back safely, for everyone.

More hand sanitizer needs to be available all around site, not just outside of port-o-potties.
Good ol' port-o-potties should not be the norm for events like this anymore. They weren't getting sanitized after each and every use at the Bayshore Drive-In shows and they weren't pumped between double-header shows like Major Lazer (gross). If there's not a structure bathroom facility to offer attendees then restroom trailers like Porta Lisas should be rented and used rather than port-o-potties. Sure, restroom trailers are more expensive but they are way more sanitary and easier to sanitize.

Along with more security on-site patrolling to make sure people are following COVID compliance safety, there should also be the same amount of CCOs (COVID compliance officers) on-site. CCOs know what to look for and how to keep people safe therefore they should be enforcing  COVID compliance protocols and security would be there to assist if someone got unruly.
Artists should not out right invite people to fall out of COVID compliance protocols, period.
I don't know if that would be a contractual thing or what but...

Obviously, masks are key.
Please wear your mask everywhere you go, everything you do. If more people consistently wore masks live music would come back sooner. Restaurants, bars, gyms, salons...everything would come back sooner.
If you don't do it for yourself or for other people do it for music.
If you're one of those people who's reasoning for not wearing a mask is that  "the government shouldn't tell people what to do" please, kindly, get over yourself. Seriously, stop and listen to yourself, look at your life. What else are you doing that the government or society tells you to do? Is it more than simply wearing a mask during a pandemic?

The way I see it, people who still make the conscious decision to not wear a mask in public continue to take away my livelihood and the livelihood of thousands of live event workers and crew (that includes professional sports all you sports fans). Think about that the next time to decide not to wear a mask because it's your choice. It's not my choice to have the industry doing what I love disappear but every time a person doesn't wear a mask they are making that choice for me and thousands of other people around the world.

Huge shout out to 1690 Collective, the parking and traffic team! Their hard working crew put their health and safety on the line to usher cars in and get them parked (socially distanced of course) for all of the Bayshore Drive-In shows.

Trick or Treat, Give Me Something Good To Eat...

Autumn means it's time for pumpkin spice and everything nice, or at least everything pumpkin spice.

As soon as October hits the pumpkin craze begins, usually with Starbucks' un-vailing of their annual, limited release of their coveted menu item the PSL (pumpkin spice latte). After that, literally everything, everywhere is pumpkin.

This year, instead of reviewing a pumpkin something or other cupcake, of which are plentiful, I decided to review different pumpkin goodies.

I popped in Jane the Bakery for a cookie to satisfy a craving and ended up leaving with a cookie and a muffin. It was a pumpkin muffin and muffins are basically cupcakes without frosting so my seemingly glutenous purchase felt justified because I'd get a Halloween time review out of it. Plus, I saved the muffin for breakfast the next morning and had the cookie for dessert that night, naturally.

I thought the candy corn-esque paper wrapper was a cute little touch but as I started un-wrapping the muffin from it I realized that it wasn't a candy corn wrapper at all. The bottom of the wrapper had turned yellow from absorbing some of the goodness (butter) from the muffin. Two more things happened as I unwrapped the muffin: 1. paper stuck to the bottom of it 2. it smelled so good! The season's first whiff of a pumpkin baked good is so delicious! It makes you want to get all cozy.

Once I had it completely unwrapped I was happy to see that semi-sweet chocolate chips were baked into the muffin, not just sitting on top of it. After my first couple of bites it was clear that it smelled more pumpkiny than it tasted. It was very dense and even though the orange paper that wrapped it had changed color, presumably from absorbing butter, the muffin wasn't very buttery or very moist. There were parts of it that were gooey which I though might be caramel but it wasn't caramel. I'm not sure what caused it to be gooey but I liked it.

It was a thick and filling muffin with a hint of pumpkin stock full of chocolate chips. Usually you see pumpkin paired with cheese cake, a butter-cream or cream cheese frosting (vanilla, cinnamon...) or simply a "frosted pumpkin" if paired with anything at all. You don't see the chocolate and pumpkin combo often and I for one really enjoyed it. I think that dark chocolate or semi-chocolate is the way to go rather than milk chocolate only because pumpkin can be such a strong flavor and milk chocolate might get lost in it.

Jane the Bakery has all sorts of baked goods. From their breads which are baked daily using locally sourced grains, to their wide variety of croissants and cookies (which include some gluten-free and vegan options) and an array of morning pastries like muffins, brioche, cinnamon rolls and slices of breakfast breads (banana and lemon). There's really no going wrong at Jane the Bakery.

For as much as I love cupcakes, my love for doughnuts is just as strong. I could not resist the temptation to try pumpkin spice/spiced pumpkin doughnuts from two of my favorite doughnut spots in SF: Bob's Donuts and Johnny Doughnuts

Bob's Donuts on Polk Street is an SF staple, if you've never been please make it a point to do so. They're open 24 hours so there's really no excuse not to.

When I went, Bob's had a couple different pumpkin spice options and after asking the girl behind the counter which one she'd recommend I got a pumpkin spice, raised, crumb doughnut.

Johnny Doughnuts has one pumpkin doughnut to chose from, the spiced pumpkin cake. It's a variation of an old fashion doughnut (my fave) topped with a simple glaze. Maybe vanilla,  maybe just sugar, it's unclear.

To my surprise both of the doughnuts, like the muffin from Jane the Bakery, only had a hint of pumpkin flavor. Both of them were delicious of course (as usual) and they were both light and fluffy but they didn't have that pumpkin punch I was expecting. If I didn't know that the one from Bob's was pumpkin spice I wouldn't have guessed that it was and while the one from Johnny's was really fragrant with a warm orange tint, it didn't taste too much like pumpkin.

If you're looking for a smidge of pumpkin to go with your morning cup of coffee either one of these pumpkin doughnuts will do the trick.

Like I said before, pumpkin can be such a strong flavor so maybe places are using caution when baking with it but I think they can totally turn it up a notch. Give the people what they want, it is pumpkin season after all!

Halloween is tomorrow but that doesn't mean it's the end of pumpkin flavored everything. There's still the whole month of November to snuggle up with some pumpkin spice pastries in your life.

Whether you're trick or treating or not, please be safe this Halloween and don't forget to wear your mask!

While Jack White has been busy with his solo work, The Dead Weather (his side project with The Kills' Alison Mosshart on lead vocals), The Raconteurs and Third Man Records, we haven't heard too much from or about The White Stripes.

According to The White Stripes Instagram account, which was just created around the same time as the announcement of their upcoming greatest hits album, the collection will include 26 songs and is titled My Sister Thanks You and I Thank You: The White Stripes Greatest Hits
It is available for pre-order on CD, double LP and digital as of now.

The White Stripes Greatest Hits track listing

After it was part of Jack's impromptu performance on SNL a couple of weeks ago, it's been confirmed that "Ball and Biscuit" is on the greatest hits track list. Apparently more tracks will be announced leading up to the release, so keep your eyes for that.

These October treats are kind of tricky since we have to wait until December to enjoy them. They are something to look forward to though!

RED ALERT: RESTART ACT #saveourstages

One month ago, on September 1st, venues in cities across the country were illuminated red to draw attention to the dire need to pass the RESART Act and the Save Our Stages Act

The live events industry was among the first to have businesses closed and events cancelled due to the pandemic and, unfortunately, due to social distancing, capacity limitations, and additional restrictions, the live event industry, will not recover in any meaningful way until well into next year at the earliest.

The live event industry is experiencing upwards of 90% revenue loss and will be closed well into 2021 due to safety concerns posed by large gatherings. Without support from Congress, 90% of the National Independent Venue Association 's independent venues across America say they will be forced to close their doors forever.
 NINETY PERCENT.

The live entertainment industry is still in an emergency state, it is still a red alert.

- Live events employ millions of people across the country

- Live events is a $877-billion industry

- 95% of live events have been cancelled due to COVID-19

- 96% of companies have cut staff and/or wages

- 77% of people in the live events industry have lost 100% of their income, including 97% of 1099 workers.

This doesn't only include concerts and music festivals. It includes and is not limited to:

- Broadway shows

- shows off of Broadway

- comedy shows/stand up comedy

- Circus Soleil

- The Ballet

- The Opera

- The Symphony

- conferences

- businesses such as restaurants, bars, ride-share companies/drivers and hotels that experience an influx of customers/business when events take place.

These venues closing permanently would also impact the entire music economy and ecosystem in America – artists, talent agents, stagehands, security, catering, artist managers, tour bus industry, production, radio/social media/tv/print advertising, record companies, and many, many others.

There is still time to reach out to congress and urge them to pass the RESTART Act, the updated HEROES Act that now includes the Save Our Stages Act

This is the final push...there won’t be another opportunity.

We NEED the #RestartAct and the #HeroesAct/#SaveOurStagesAct passed in order to keep independent venues nationwide from closing permanently.

It's not just about saving the music and the arts.

It's not just about saving jobs and livelihoods.

It's about saving culture.

Sending an email to Congress members from your state is really easy and you do not have to work in the live events industry to do it!

Follow the links below, enter some basic information (who you are and where you live), then an email will be generated and you hit send and you're done.

Eat Your Tart Out @ Smooch Tartshop

When I asked my Aunt what flavor birthday treat (cupcake) she wanted for her birthday and when she said lemon I thought I'd be hard pressed to find a lemon anything in September. I warned her that lemon is more of a Springtime and Summertime flavor...luckily chocolate was her second choice because that flavor is year round. I was super excited to see that Susie Cakes has lemon cupcakes on their menu but low and behold, when I got to the sidewalk outside of the store (yay COVID times!) lemon cupcakes were not on the limited COVID menu (yay COVID times!). So I got her one of their flourless chocolate cupcakes and she loved it (flourless chocolate cake is the best kind of chocolate cake).

The very next day after getting tested for COVID (again) I decided to walk through the Ferry Building on my way home to see if there were any treats that tickled my fancy because that shit is stressful (yay COVID times!). I had to stop at Smooch Tartshop because: 1) it was open and 2) tarts!

The two gentleman behind the counter were very friendly and helpful. They had on matching masks with Smooch tarts all over them, really cute, COVID compliant, low-key marketing! One of them started telling me about the tarts which were all on display in a little case. As I looked at all the mini tarts on display as he went into detail but I knew which tart I wanted right away. The one that most resembled a cupcake, naturally. As my luck would have it, that was the Lemon Ginger Meringue. LEMON!

Each tart is $6.50 or there's a sample pack that comes with 4 bite-sized mini tarts for $10. I was very tempted to go with the 4 pack so that I could try more flavors, but I stuck to my guns. The tart fit perfectly into the individually sized box they put it in and sealed it with a smooch sticker.

The lightly toasted meringue was still picture perfect by the time I got back home and I let it sit out over night to enjoy it in the morning with a cup of coffee.

It only felt appropriate to eat the tart by cutting little bite sized slices of it rather than take bites out of it, so that's what I did. I was a little worried that keeping it out over night might have ruined the consistency but the lemon curd was nice and thick as I sliced through it, the meringue hadn't melted and the crust didn't crumble one bit.
The lemon curd filling is everything you would want from a lemon curd filling, it's tartness hitting that tingly spot right behind your ears. The lemon overpowered the ginger, or maybe the ginger enhanced the lemon, either way I didn't taste any of the ginger kick but it was still delicious!

In my brain meringue is made of marshmallows: it's fluffy, white and made out of sugar but meringue is not made of marshmallows. Even as I cut through it, I was worried it'd stick to the knife but it's not a tacky texture, it's a whipped one. As I sliced through it mess-free, I was surprised to see that the filling stuck to the knife more than the meringue on top of it did. It was light and sweet: the perfect counterpart to the rich lemon curd filling, it's sweetness waltzing with the sour as they melted together in my mouth.
While all three components of the tart had a noticeable freshness, the crust took the cake. It wasn't flakey or crumbly or dry, even after leaving it out over night! It's buttery goodness made me wish there was more of it, it was quite delectable.

By itself, the lemon curd filling isn't rich but paired this with the sweet meringue and buttery crust, the whole mini tart in one sitting was almost too much, even for me.
Almost.
Treat yourself to a tart from Smooch Tartshop at the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero in San Francisco on Saturdays starting at 9am until supplies run out. They're also open for pick-up and delivery. All of their tarts are vegetarian and they offer some gluten-free options with custom orders, too. Organic ingredients are used as much as possible which is a quality you can really taste.

Now you know where to go for your lemony treats Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall!
