Noise Pop 2020: Bag Raiders @ The Independent 2/28/2020

Last year the electro-pop duo Bag Raiders released Horizons, their second album to date since their self titled, 2010 debut. The last time the LA transplants from Australia were in SF was in 2015 when they played at The Rickshaw Stop

They brought their party to The Independent for the closing weekend of the 28th Annual Noise Pop Festival on Friday, February 28th.

Their  headlining show was sold-out but there was room to wiggle even as the opening act came to end. Presumably, space was held for Noise Pop badge holders to sneak a peek of the high demand show.

It was a later show as far as SF shows go,  it's fair to say the crowd was ready to for Bag Raiders to start once they hit the stage around 11:00. Jack Glass and Chris Stracey were accompanied by a third, making their duo a trio on stage. And, they were all wearing matching, white bucket hats (yes, they are trendy again).

Excited to show off new, jazzy, disco synths they jumped right in with "Lightning". As squeaky synths, pulsating beats and shimmering melodies flowed from the stage, dreamy almost psychedelic   lighting accentuated their infectious, spirit lifting vibe. Glass and Stracey harmonized falsettos on "Breakdown" and mixed things up by slowing things down with "Wild A Heart".

The band found their groove and comfortably jammed out to new, unique sounds like those found on Horizons' "Medicine" as well as throw back bangers like "Sunlight".
Fans dug the drum solo mid set, ceasing that time to take a breather before the show ramped back up with danceable, indielectro Bag Raiders are known for.

"Shooting Stars" is easily the epitome of Bag Raiders' signature sound with it's inescapable, dazzling layers of synths. There's really no better song that they could end a show with and they danced along with fans as they played their biggest hit, ending the night on a high note with "Shooting Stars".

There's no doubt about it, Bag Raiders' show at The Independent was a great way to kick off the closing weekend of San Francisco's long running, city wide, indie music festival.

Best of shows in 2020

I've grown up going to shows since my very concert when I was 5 years old. I have worked in and around live music for at least 15 years, it is a huge part of my life. I have been fortunate that my blog has allowed me to cover so many shows over the years and I will not take any future shows I get to go to for granted, not that I did but now I definitely won't.

There weren't many, so every show I went to in 2020 ended up making it on to my best shows of the year list.

1. Shakey Graves @ The Independent January 27th, 2020

Four days before Shakey Graves played three nights at The Independent I figured why not try to get myself in to cover one of the shows. On the morning of Monday January 27th, 2020 I was approved to cover night two of his three night stay. I got there early to increase my chances of getting some decent photos with the only camera I have, my iPhone 8. What a magical night it was. I can still remember as chills of euphoria washed over me through out the show and I knew then that I was at one of the best shows I'd see that year. With the way 2020 turned out for live music, Shakey Graves at The Independent on January 27th held on to that top spot making it my #1 show of 2020.

2. Mumford & Sons @ Okeechobee Festival in Florida March 8th, 2020

By March 8th, 2020 I think everyone knew that something not good was about to happen though no one knew or could have guessed what. I usually don't review  festivals that I work or include them in recaps like this because well, it's work and I usually don't get to see much, if any of the music at festivals when I am working. At Okeechobee I was working with some of the best of the best artist hospitality workers in the biz on what was the cusp of this global pandemic. We were all looking forward to working Coachella together, little did we know that our livelihoods were about to be ripped away from us in the blink of an eye with as little as a moments notice. Though we didn't really talk about it at the time because we didn't really know what was about to happen, we could all tell, and we all knew that something was weird looming and not in the fun way. But the show had to go on and it did. It was my first time working the four day festival in Florida and on the last night me and some of my co-workers caught a few songs of the headliner, Mumford & Sons. I'd worked lots of festivals that Mumford has headlined but this was my first time actually seeing them. I finally saw "Little Lion Man" live and that made me and makes me really happy and very grateful that I got to enjoy that experience.

Not only was really hoping to be approved to cover Poppy at the Great American Music Hall on January 23rd but I was really excited to see her live! I was so curious about how she'd be live and what she would wear! This is one of those shows where I tried and tried, email after email and I did not get approved due to high demand media coverage. To my surprise, my good friend pulled some strings and bought me a ticket so I could go to the sold-out show. Bass was loud, strobe lights were blinding and the eclectic crowd that packed the room loved it. It was definitely something. Even though I wasn't approved to officially cover Poppy at the Great American Music Hall that night, I still did anyway.

4. Best Coast @ The Regency Ballroom February 29th, 2020

Before flying out to Florida on March 2nd to work Okeechobee, I got a late, last minute invitation to see Best Coast at The Regency Ballroom on Saturday February 29th. Of course I said yes. I'm not a huge fan but that has never stopped me to seeing a show, for free, with a friend, let alone a good friend and it never will. It was the night before last of the Noise Pop Festival here in SF and the show that night felt like it was super close to being sold-out if it wasn't. Bay Area fans are pretty loyal to Best Coast and I love being in crowds like that. I have covered Best Coast before and this was the liveliest and most personable I had ever seen them. In 2020 hindsight I gotta say I'm happy that this ended up being the last show I saw last year. There was a great vibe in the air, along with a lot of pot smoke so I guess you can say that my show going ended on a high note.

5. Bag Raiders @ The Independent February 28th, 2020

2020 marked the 28th year of the Noise Pop Festival which pretty much takes over venues across the Bay Area for two weeks straight. It's a unique music festival that ranges from unknown acts, up and coming bands, local favorites and well known, popular musicians and bands. Even the press/photo passes are kind of unique: you can't get approved to cover just a show with a single, one off pass. You get a passport sort of deal so you can cover as much of the festival as possible during it's run. I went a different route and was stoked when I got approved to cover Bag Raiders at The Independent on February 28th. They've had some buzz over the years in the San Francisco music scene but I had never seen them before, plus  it was the closing weekend of the Noise Pop fest.

6. Major Lazer @ Bayshore Drive-in October 24th, 2020

I honestly didn't think I'd work another show for a long time. When I was hired to work on the parking and traffic team for the Bayshore Drive-in shows late last year I cannot describe the joy that it brought me. One of the show dates was two back to back Major Lazer shows. Major Lazer is a dance fusion experimental project of Diplo's and Diplo is a well known DJ/producer for those who don't know. People were so excited to be there, a lot of them were dressed up in partial to full on raver gear and there were lots of sparkles being worn. I was back in my element, playing a part in bringing joy to other people, complete strangers, all there for the same reason, music.
Ah, my heart.
People danced outside of there cars, people danced on top of their cars and in truck beds. They clapped and cheered and sang along under their mask. It was a good time, different but still a good time.

7. Atmosphere @ The Regency Ballroom February 11th, 2020

It had been years since I had seen Atmosphere at The Greek Theatre in Berkeley. The show at The Regency Ballroom last year was definitely scaled down because of the difference in size of the two Bay Area venues but the crowd's enthusiasm was not. Neither was the rapper's enthusiastic energy. If it were any other year I can't say that this show would make it to my best of list but 2020 was not like any other year.

8. Envision in Costa Rica February 17th - 24th, 2020

Luna Stage @ Envision Festival February 2020

Envision Festival holds a special place in my heart. 2020 was the third year that I ventured into the rain forest along the coast of Coast Rica to work this, hippy, yoga, art & music festival. It's hot, it's sweaty, it's grueling and the on-site living conditions are...well, they are what they are. Working this festival has allowed me to grow as a festival worker and as a person and I get to do it with some of my most favorite people ever. Last year I worked the over night shift in the VIP cabanas and even though I didn't necessarily see any music, I was able to hear some type of techno pumping from the Lapa stage right which is right next to the cabanas from.
And, the Lapa stage goes from dusk til dawn, just like the cabanas.
The stage design of one of the main stages, Luna Stage always impresses me and it was exquisitely breath taking yet again. I don't know how they do it and I can't wait to see what they do with it for Envision 2022.

9. Andrew St. James in Nob Hill area August 13th, 2020

Andrew St. James @ Nob Hill Area in SF 8/13/2020

Musicians found creative ways to bring us shows during the pandemic: a lot went virtual, some played drive-in shows and some, like Andrew St. James, took it to the streets. These were not your typical shows, but in a year of "new normals" what is typical anymore? After five months of what felt like forever these pop-ups were some of the the only live shows being offered in SF. Andrew St James was taking requests via Instagram and then showing up and playing where people asked him to play. That's a pretty cool thing to do to keep the music alive and his music translated well to the acoustic busking.

Drama @ The Independent 3/4/2020

I didn't personally go to this show so I can't technically include them on my 2020 best of shows list. Drama at The Independent on March 4th was the last show that I got officially approved to cover for Sweet Sound Bites in 2020 & covered. I was pretty bummed I missed this show because I dig their style and it looks like it was a good one. I'm glad I got approved to cover it for Sweet Sound Bites though.

Two shows I had lined up and was really looking forward to were  Grouplove and Glass Animals.

I hardly ever buy tickets to shows but when I found out Glass Animals were playing intimate shows at small venues in anticipation of the release of their new album I knew I had to go! I got denied coverage pretty much as fast I had asked, no surprise there. So, I was happy to be able to buy a ticket to their sold-out show at The Independent on March 12th but it was canceled just hours before door were supposed to open.
I'd never seen Grouplove at a one off show and they had just dropped a new album in January. I was thrilled that I got approved to cover them at The Catalyst Club in Santa Cruz on March 24th and was so excited for the show. Sadly by that time all tours had already come to a screeching halt.

For a year when all shows were canceled by the second week of March this isn't a bad spread of shows considering how short the "season" was. There are pre-covid shows, pre-covid festivals, different kinds of shows during covid times and in the age of learning to appreciate everything you have, shows that wouldn't have otherwise made it to the list if it wasn't for the pandemic cutting things short.
I wonder what shows will be like in the new normal.

Please wear a mask so we can get back to going to shows and so that everybody can have a happier year than 2020.

The Independent SF grand re-opening with Con Brio 7/9/2021

Nearly a year and a half after shutting it's doors The Independent in SF is re-opened!

Just hours before the Glass Animals show on March 12th, 2020 the intimate venue went dark in ordnance with California's shelter in place orders and CDC guidelines.

Following the CDC's lift on the mask mandate and California opening up 100% on June 15th, the 500 person capacity venue welcomed people to enjoy live music there once again on Friday July 9th with SF's own, Con Brio.

There is a COVID safety caveat: every attendee must show proof of being fully vaccinated or have a negative COVID test within 72 hours of show time. This new normal factor is disclosed on the ticket purchasing page of the Independent's website and helpful emails with instructions on how to verify vaccination or otherwise using the CLEAR app are also sent out before the show.

The friendly Another Planet staff was very helpful, happily getting people in line vaccine verified as they waited to go into the show. Doors opened at 8:30 and the show scheduled to start at 9:00 with openers Secret Sidewalk. I was so excited to be back for a show at one of my favorite music venues in SF that one of the first people inside.

The familiarity of the dim, indigo lighting and the stage embellished with idle instruments waiting to be played was comforting as the room slowly filled with people joyously waiting for the bands to play them.  All of the staff at The Independent was familiar, too which was nice to see being that so many businesses are struggling since staff have relocated during quarantine. In addition to the CLEAR app verifications outside, there are a couple changes inside since the last time there were shows here: the bar is cashless and they no longer serve Lagunitas

The grand re-opening show was sold-out and as further proof that somethings never change, even in a pandemic, the crowd steadily gathered and the music started about 15 minutes behind schedule.

Bag Raiders on February 28th, 2020 was the last show I saw (and reviewed) here before the lockdown. Coincidently,  the openers at that show,  Secret Sidewalk, also opened for Con Brio.

As their instrumental, modern, experimental, funk filled the room so too did un-masked show goers. By the end of their 45 minute long set, I felt a little awkward being so close to so many people, so many strangers. Even though I knew everyone there was vaccinated or provided a negative COVID test, I chose to mask up while I was in the thick of it and it looked as though I might have been the only person there that night to make that choice.

The headliners took the stage around 10:30 and the effervescent crowd continued dancing, smiling and cheering. Singer Ziek McCarter upped the energy ante, exuding positivity as he belted out songs but it was his smooth dance moves that brought the fire. Spinning, kicking and engaging with elated fans elevated the already high vibes in the room and brought everyone closer together, so to say.

Con Brio literally means with a liveliness or spirit and the band is and did exactly that. They did not take the grand re-opening show of the Indy lightly. There's no doubt about the fact that genuine fun was had by everyone from beginning to end.

It was their first time playing at The Independent since 2015 and they played old stuff as well as new stuff with a good mix of some party starters and some slow grooves. There was plenty of appreciation for fans being there, for the working staff, for everyone making it through the ups and downs of 2020 and for The Independent for having them.

The show went on past midnight and there couldn't have been a better way to celebrate the return of live music at The Independent than a sold-out show on a Friday night with two local, good vibes only, acts.

Live music is back!

The last show I went to before the lock-down: Best Coast @ The Regency Ballroom 2/29/2020

When I saw Best Coast  headline at The Regency Ballroom on February 29th,  I had no idea that it would be the last live show I'd see in SF for the foreseeable future.

Best Coast @ The Regency Ballroom 2/29/2020

It was the second to last night of the 27th annual Noise Pop Music Festival and I only had a few days at home  between working Envision in Costa Rica and Okeechobee Music Fest in Florida. I been approved to cover Bag Raiders at The Independent the night before which was the only show of the week long Noise Pop Festival bill I had planned on going to.

Best Coast @ The Regency Ballroom 2/29/2020

A few hours before doors opened I got a text asking if I wanted to go to the Best Coast show, turns out my friend had a +1. It was a Saturday night and I already had plans to meet another friend for dinner but The Regency was just down the street, I could totally do both. Get in some double friend time hangs while I was home and see a show. After dinner I hopped in a lyft, got to the venue, waited in line and collected my ticket at will-call. I met my friend inside and got a beer as we chit chatted during most of the opening set.
With a longtime, loyal following in the Bay Area and a recently released ew album it wasn't surprising to see the main floor packed by the time Best Coast went on. The aroma of pot and rolling applause filled the air. I don't remember as many people being in the band, in my head Best Coast has always been Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno but there they were, all four of them on stage.

More than half of their set, which consisted of 15 songs, came off of their new album, Always Tomorrow. Two years after their 4th album Best Kids, Always Tomorrow dropped on February 21st so again, it's no surprise we heard a lot of it at the show that night.

In a power-suit with the band's initials embroidered on the lapels  (which also happen to be her initials) Bethany was looking svelte. The high knot bun she was rocking gave her an alt-rock edge but it was definitely noticeable that the front-lady was carrying herself with a new confidence.
There weren't too many pauses between songs which is something typical of the LA surf-rock rockers but when there was banter it felt lighter than the previous times I've seen them. Bobb kept to himself as he usually does, behind a fan that softly blows his beautiful long locks around as he plays but there was something different about Bethany, something good and it made me feel happy for her. It was the most personable Best Coast show that I've seen and the crowd was lively so I think they felt the new vibes, too.

I had bought a ticket to see Glass Animals at The Independent on March 12th, I don't buy concert tickets often but I was so excited to see that Glass Animals were playing smaller venues I couldn't miss it! The show was a couple of days after I got home from Okeechobee, things were already starting to feel weird and parts of SF were already a ghost town but I still had hope that afternoon that the show would go on. Sure enough it got canceled. And then all shows everywhere got canceled.

The neon signed that glowed on stage that night at Best Coast has been burned into my memory, Always Tomorrow

Tomorrow is a funny thing because it never really comes but you can't give up hope.
Best Coast at The Regency wasn't suppose to be the last show that I saw in San Francisco this year and maybe it won't be...
Whenever tomorrow comes, that day when we can go to a show with friends, it will be the best day.
I'm really looking forward to it.

My favorite albums of 2019

When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
Billie Eilish
1. Billie Eilish - When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
After three years of non-stop touring and hit single after hit single after hit single, 17 year old (now 18 years old) Billie Eilish finally released her debut album, When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? in March of 2019. Unbeknownst at the time, the single "You Should See Me In a Crown", which was released in July of 2018, was one of the 14 tracks off of her highly anticipated debut album.
The first official single from the When We Fall Asleep Where Do We Go, was "Bad Guy". The deviously catchy song with an inescapable beat, layers of hooks and those simple, sarcastic breaks has been all over the airwaves since it's release as well as on heavy rotation in my ears.

Though her song lyrics mature her past her years and are poignant to a tee, tweens and teenage girls are the largest and probably most loyal portion of her fan base which inevitably boomed when her album dropped. When We Fall Asleep Where Do We Go? has songs about the zoned out/over medicated/preoccupied society of today, stardom, growing up in the lime light, un-requited love/crush/lust, losing a friend, battling inner demons. As a whole it ebbs and flows between upbeat and somber with intermittent candid clips of Billie herself and sound clips from her favorite TV show, The Office. And no matter what the tempo, as we already knew with 2016's "Ocean Eyes", this girl can sing. It's introspective, it's different, it's fun, it effortlessly blends genres. Billie Eilish's first album is easy to listen to from it's "!!!" intro to it's montaged "goodbye" and it still has me hooked.

Solutions
K-Flay
2. K-Flay: Solutions
The follow up to K-Flay's Grammy Award winning 2017 album, Everywhere Is Somewhere would prove to be a real test. Sophomore albums are hard enough but with the July 12th release of her third album,  Solutions, K-Flay came out victorious. The once upon a time Standford rapper also came out leading up to her new album which most likely played a huge role in the softer, more optimistic side of K-Flay that she unabashedly now shares with us. Before the album we got "Bad Vibes" in March and while it's title suggests bad vibes ahead, the beat heavy, rock-rap-synth track leaves you feeling good vibes. "Bad Vibes" was the perfect foreshadow of Solutions and K-Flay's shift from a negative perception to a positive one.

The first three of ten songs are my favorite, opening with the self loving anthem with sparkly build ups and euphoric climaxes, "I Like Myself" (Most of the Time). By the time the album dropped it's second track "Bad Vibes" was already a hit and coming up behind it is the sassy, dancey "This Baby Don't Cry". K-Flay may have shifted perspectives but the things we love most about her haven't changed: her unique voice and her smart lyrics. When you listen, really listen to her songs and hear what she's saying, you're like, "yes!". Just like my #1 Billie Eilish, K-Flay has a creative way of keeping it real and I really like that.

3. Missy Elliot - Iconology full EP.
2019 was a big year for Missy Misdemeanor Elliot: she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, becoming the first female rapper to ever receive the honor. She received an honorary Doctor of Music Degree from Berkeley College of Music and she was the first female rapper to receive the MTV Michael Jackson Vanguard award. This year she also released new music for the first time in almost 15 years! On August 23rd Iconology dropped, officially bringing Missy Elliot back. Ok, Ok, it's an EP not an LP but it's good. It's funky, sassy and original like only Missy can do. Maybe we'll get a full LP soon, until then Iconology will be on repeat.

Iconology

Top songs of 2019

"Spaceships" - Tank and The Bangas

"Juice" - Lizzo
"Sunday Driver" - The Raconteurs

"In This Life" - Bag Raiders
