Straight out of San Francisco, The Brothers Comatose played a lively, sold-out show in the city they call home last Thursday night at The Independent

The five-piece bluegrass consists of a stand up bass payer, a guitarist, a violinist, a banjo player and a mandolin player with all five of the guys contributing vocals at some point.

Their fourth album, Ink, Dust and Luck was released last year and homegrown fans outwardly loved every song offered on their set-list that night which included a hearty cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence".

And yes, there are brothers in the band! Ben and Alex Morrison. Ben, who was front and center most of the night, shared the spot light as each musician got at least one solo.

The whole room was alive with music last Thursday night thanks to The Brothers Comatose and their modern take on classic bluegrass.

The Night Running Tour with Starcrawler @ The Shoreline Amphitheater 7/16/2019

Beck and Cage the Elephant are on the road together this Summer co-headlining The Night Running Tour with special guests Spoon and Starcrawler was the opener at The Shoreline Amphitheater on Tuesday July 16th.

It was a warm Summer evening and a golden hue cast around the outdoor venue as Starcrawler took the stage for an early 6pm opening set.

In a fashionable raggy pink dress, Arrow de Wilde and the LA based band started the show on a grungy, glam-punk note. Her pink highlighted blonde hair covered her face for the most part as she sang and thrashed about.

The lengthy leading lady gradually came out of her shell, exposing the weird stage antics Starcrawler is known for, like when she spit on photographers in the photo pit in the beginning of their set. Maybe it was mix of the pink dress, blonde hair and low vocals but Courtney Love circa Celebrity Skin kept coming to mind. Their cover of "Pet Semetary" by The Ramones got some people in the seated section up and out of their seats if they weren't already. "She Gets Around" got people a little more riled up as de Wilde wrapped her long microphone cord around her neck, seemingly choking herself during the song.

By the last song of their set, 2018's "Chicken Woman", de Wilde had popped a capsule of fake blood in her mouth, letting it drip on her forearm before smearing it into a mess. In the blink of an eye she was in the seats, face to face with a couple of fans who had been singing and dancing along the whole time.

As the band carried the rest of the song out, she staggered around the seated section, laying on the ground until someone from the crowd offered a helping hand. The set ended with her making her way back to the stage and staggering off side-stage as Henri Cash wailed away on his guitar.

Starcrawler's spirited set got a small standing ovation from the early arrivals who'd found their seats.

Spoon was up next, followed by Cage The Elephant, leaving Beck to close the show. Starcrawler's antics aligned with the performance that Cage gave.

Matt Shultz, Cage The Elephant's front man who's know to walk the eccentric line, owned it that night. He came out in a full nylon body suit covered with fake tattoos, red shorts and a matching mid-drift tank top, a wool coat, goggles, a painters face mask, a hat and knee pads.

He eventually ended up losing the accessories or smashing them to bits and it's plain to see why he's often compared to the great Mick Jagger. Not only does he resemble the Rolling Stones' front man (that mouth!) but he works the stage like Jagger does. He swivels his hips, he jumps, he kicks and he doesn't stop once he starts.

And not Shultz didn't just work the stage, he worked the crowd. He got into crowd multiple times all over the venue. Performing from an isle in the seated section, he went to the edge of the seats where the box seats are, he even sang from the edge of the lawn section as fans pawed at him. He was easily somewhere in the crowd for at least half of the show from the 3rd song on.

Sure, it's not uncommon for an artist to go into the crowd for a little bit, especially at bigger arena shows, but he made sure that everyone there got their money's worth that night no matter where their ticket got them.
It was wild and exhilarating to see it first hand.

They played new stuff, old stuff and all of the hits in between and their set was what rock N roll show dreams are made of. It was genuine and passionate, it's everything you want when you go to a show and everything you never knew you wanted from a rock band.

Cage always gives us a great show and they did not disapoint at The Shoreline the slightest. And then,  Beck was up next. He made the crowd lose it opening with "Loser" and not before long Matt Shultz was back on the stage performing their single, "Night Running" with him.

The Night Running tour is a great rock show but Starcrawler isn't the opener for every show on the tour. Sunflower Bean and Wilde Belle share the stage with Spoon, Cage The Elephant and Beck in select cities. $1 from every ticket sold is being donated back to every city they play in thanks to the co-headliners partnering up with PLUS1. As if you needed another reason to get yourself out to the Night Running Tour.

Morat’s Bakery Cupcake

I think I’ve said this before, and I’ll probably say it again...I work a lot of music festivals. Furthermore, I work with food vendors at a lot of the music festivals I do work and I gotta say, I’m surprised there aren’t more cupcakes being sold at music festivals. Ok, so maybe cupcakes aren’t as trendy as they were at the beginning of the millennium but they’re still out there. As far as festival foods go cupcakes are right on the money: you can hold it in one hand (leaving the other hand free for a food selfie or to hold your totem), doesn’t take long to eat, relatively no mess and cupcakes don’t cost much. Plus, they’re a perfect sugar rush to pick you up anytime of day or night.

Electric Forest is a magical festival that takes place in Rothbury Michigan, it is easily one of the best fests I get to work.
This was the 9th year that "Forest" has brought brought strangers together with the magical wonders of music, art, community and food. Over 60 food vendors nourished attendees and workers over the 4 day camping festival including 3 unique specialty food activations:
- Cereal Sundae, offering sundaes made with your choice of classic cereal flavors, toppings and type of milk (ice cream optional).
- Burger Planet, a 50's style themed burger stand with mouth watering add ons for burgers like thick strips of bacon or fried egg (or both), fresh cut steak fresh and milk shakes.
- Shakes, a newbie this year served up hand-crafted, caffeinated concoctions.

Though no food vendors had cupcakes on their menu, something magical happened during load-in. Morat's Bakery, which is local to those parts came early and brought fresh baked pastries as a thanks. The assortment they brought our team had whoopie pies, cake and half a dozen cupcakes. Each of the 6 cupcakes were different flavors. One looked like cherry, one looked like lemon, another looked like it might be toasted coconut. I went with the one that looked like it was pistachio flavored. The one with green frosting sprinkled with what looked like little pieces of pistachios. I had never had a pistachio cupcake and I've been on a pistachio flavored sweets kick lately (which I attribute to Italians love for Spumone). I also thought that the green frosting was fitting for The Forest (green, forest...get it?)

There were traces of the green "nut", indeed making this otherwise vanilla cupcake a pistachio cupcake. The frosting, whipped to a light and fluffy consistency, was sugary and fresh, melting in my mouth with each bite. The cake was light, and fluffy, and fresh too. The vanilla cake had a touch of green coloring and I couldn't tell if there was any pistachio flavor added to it or if it was just some green food dye. It was a good, standard, cupcake but I do wish that it tasted as much like pistachio as it looked like it would. I think a little re-vamping of this exotic flavor could go a long way: instead of a vanilla cake do a flour less chocolate cake (because flour
less chocolate cake is the best kind of chocolate cake) with chunks of pistachios and a pistachio buttercream frosting. Throw some edible green glitter or confetti stars on top and give it a festive name like the Forest cupcake and all the festival kids will want cupcakes.

Billie Eilish @ The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium 5/29/2019

Three years ago a 14 year old girl by the name of Billie Eilish released a song called "Ocean Eyes" on SoundCloud and she hasn't slowed down since. After seeing her San Francisco debut performance when she opened for MCHL at Popscene in 2016, she's grown up and blown up before my eyes.
Dripping in bling, she looks the part of a SoundCloud rapper AKA Mumble Rapper with her baggy, bright colored, high-end brand labeled clothes but her music is a far cry from that. Her sound is a kind of goth-indie pop. She is the walking epitope of "don't judge a book by it's cover." Her voice is that of a young Lana Del Rey, raspy yet ultra feminine and wispy at times with an unabashed vulnerability. Lyrics to the songs she sings are bold beyond her years. While they're fun and catchy there's also profound depth surging with a maturity that doesn't let you forget that her older brother, Finneas is her biggest collaborator.

Don't Smile at Me, her 1st EP which includes hits that put the spot light on her, "Ocean Eyes", "Bellyache" and "idontwanttobeyouanymore", "My Boy" and "Copy Cat" was released in August 2017. It was then re-released in September with the singles she collaborated with Vance Staples on "&burn" and a remix of "Watch".

Last year, along with being on her own tour and working the festival circuit pretty hard, Billie announced that her debut album would be out early 2019.  When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? dropped on March 29th after the announcement of the When We Fall Asleep world tour in February. By that point Billie Eilish had made a name for herself and when her long awaited debut album finally dropped the 17 year old was, is, the hottest name in music.
The first stop on her 23 stop North American tour was at The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco in May 29th. This show, just like all the others, sold out. 8,500 hyper adolescences and their parents lined the city streets, itching to get hours before doors were open. Once they were, it was a stampede of young girls, tweens and teens in Billie Eilish shirts, hoodies and beanies hurrying excitedly to the front of the stage. Those who didn’t rush to the stage waited in long lines to get merch which was not cheap. Months worth of allowance dished out for $75 hoodies and $25 beanies (pro tip, Billie Eilish merch  is cheaper on her website plus you get a digital copy of the album with every purchase).

Ticket holders continued to stream in during Denzel Curry's opening act. Singing all the words to his songs as they meandered around the venue, the whole place was alive with juvenile elation. The average age of attendees at the Wednesday night show was 10 year old to 17 year old girls, and their parents who were nice enough to not only buy them tickets but also to take them to a concert on a school night.
I could hardly believe my ears when the young headliner took the stage, the girl everyone including Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong and family was there to see. The fact that she opened with her hottest song, one of the hottest songs of the Summer and quite possibly the hottest song of the year, "Bad Guy" was not as surprising as how loud the crowd sang along to it. I've heard screaming fans at Justin Timberlake, The Weeknd and Jonas Brothers where people hit decuples of  screaming bloody murder, but this was something else, a first for me. These fans sang like their lives depended on it. No matter where you stood, you could not hear Billie Eilish singing for at least the first three songs of her set.

Not different than what we saw at her Coachella performances in April, the grandiose stage design with a slightly elevated platform, backed by huge, back lit LED screens was still minimalistic. With her two bandmates tucked in each corner, the rest of the stage was Billie's open range.

She tirelessly paced back and forth and got some impressive air as she jumped around. She knows exactly how to work the crowd into a frenzy, she even dared to go into the crowd at one point. Her silly faces, slinky dance moves and lighthearted antics characterized the 80 minute long set which naturally flowed with high and low tempos. You could tell by the way she'd stop and take it all in with soft smiles, bashful chuckles and sweet shaking of her head in disbelief, Billie Eilish was just as euphoric to be there as all of her fans were. The energy in the room, whether on the cramped floor or up in the sweaty balcony, gave me goosebumps.

As the end of the set neared, an iron framed bed descended from the sky, allowing the siblings to perform songs from it as floated high above the stage. It was a neat theatric as well as an appropriate one being that it is the When We Fall Asleep tour.

With just a few more shows to go here in the States, Billie Eilish's fan base will only continue to grow as her world tour continues. When I reviewed her back in 2016, I'd said we'd see her grow as a performer and have we ever. If you only see one show this Summer, make it a point to see and experience Billie Eilish while she's on top. If she keeps things up and doesn't burn herself out, she might be there for a while.
