Indie's newest incarnation, Slyvan Esso took the stage at The Fillmore on Friday night smiling and waving to a room full of jubilant show goers. A prevailing frolicsome connection between Amelia Randall and Nicholas Sanborn cast an amicable vibe throughout the venue, casually inviting the room to groove to their indie-rap-dance fusion music. And many accepted the invitation, calmly dancing and cooing from the top of the set.

Their unwavering compatibility on stage lent itself to an utmost seamless performance of their catchy hauntingly romantic danceable tracks off of their self-titled debut album. It's hard to believe that the two North Carolina natives recorded said album, less than a year ago, and in Nicholas' bedroom no less. Though the live production stripped away some of the glitch elements heard on the album, their distinct unique pop remained and played out well on stage.
While Amelia impressively wiggled, twisted and swiveled her hips around the historic stage in 4'' platforms, her soothing singing remained steady and Nicholas un-audibly sang along to every song while meticulously keeping the rhythmic dreamy beats flowing.

There were more high-tempo tunes from their debut album like "Dreamy Bruises" and the punchy-fun "H.S.T.K" on the set-list Friday night but the few down-tempo, slow jams like "Coffee" and "Play It Right" still sparked dancing on and off stage.
The duo responded to the outpouring of admiration from fans with numerous thank yous which aided in adding to the engaged enjoyment. This full on fan engagement is always an exhilarating element at any show because it's seldom seen during opening acts.

You know its going to be a good show when the musical tastes of the bands on the bill compliment each other as well as they did Friday night at The Fillmore.

The crowd stayed at ease as the stage was set-up for Merrill Garbus' tUnE-yArDs and it was a fluid transition from Sylvan Esso's melodic, hypnotic and poetic, avant garde sound to tUnE-yArDs' similar spoken word style. And, it wouldn't be the last fans heard from Sylvan Esso that night.
As the show came to end, Merrill brought Amelia back to the stage for a lovely en core duet!
