The Best of 2016

2016 was a rough year in the music world. It started in January when we lost David Bowie then Prince and Merle Haggard both passed away in April, Sharon Jones and Lenard Cohen in November and we just learned of George Michael's death right after Christmas. That's not even the full list. . .

These were visionary artists. They were creative, free spirits in their own right. They pushed the envelope, broke, bent and blended musical genres. Without these musicians, singers, song-writers some of today's "stars" would have never found their voice, they would have never been heard. They didn't just change music, they shaped it in a lot of ways.

Some people say that 2016 is the year that music died and it's hard not to agree, but life isn't fair and we gotta have faith.  As hard as it may be to see a silver lining, the last year did have some good stuff.

I get excited when bands and/or artists announce new albums and I wait to buy physical copies of my favorites, which is an anomaly now for a couple different reasons. A lot of people don't listen to albums anymore and I'm not talking about vinyl. I mean pressing play and listening to an album from start to finish. It's a trend I've picked up on the last couple of years: asking people what their favorite albums of the year are so far more often than not the answer is "I don't know, I don't really listen to whole albums." People listen to songs and they don't buy physical copies of music.
Even services like Spotify make it hard to listen to an album as it's meant to be heard. Sure you can listen to all of the tracks but the only option you have is to play it on shuffle which just isn't the same.  Not only do I love full albums and listening to an album's tracks in the order the artist envision them to be heard but I love starting the new year, wondering what upcoming new releases will make it to my best of list. It's something to keep in mind all year long.
Here are my favorites from this year.

Albums

                                                                                     #1 M.I.A - A.I.M

After being shelved for months on end because the record label told her it wasn't controversial enough, M.I.A's 5th album, A.I.M, was finally released on September 9th! A.I.M isn't as world music sounding like we've heard on M.I.A's older albums, there's far less fog horns but like 2013's Matagni, M.I.A's lyrics could be considered controversial, you just have to listen and understand. She touches on topics of race, religion, refugees, Prejudices, acceptance and how the Western World has affected and continues to affect and influence all of that and everything in between. We've heard her sing these themes through out her career and I think this is her most beautiful piece of work: "Freedun" and "Survivor" being her prettiest songs.

I find it interesting that she recycles some of her old work, not by sampling but re-using lyrics from albums past or mentioning old lyrics and/or songs.  I love that the name of the album is her name backwards, it plays into how introspective her music can be: how well she's come to know herself inside and out as an artist, an activist, a mother, a person and how she inspires others not to be afraid to do the same. Or to go ahead and be afraid but to knowledge that fear, own it and then overcome it. The album features collaborations: pop-star Zyan (One Direction) on "Freedun" and version of "Bird Song" by Blaqqstar. There's another version of the same song remixed by he ex (boyfriend/producer) Diplo, which I think is a wonderful testament to how great M.I.A is. Hopefully the rumors about this being her last album are not true but unfortunately because of her re-occuring VISA issues and now our President Elect, who knows if and when we'll see M.I.A on stage in the states again.

#2 The Kills - Ash & Ice

It had been five years since hearing anything new from The Kills so I was beyond excited in March when The Kills announced they were releasing their 5th album, Ash & Ice on June 3rd! And they were going on tour in support of it! The dynamic garage rock duo really grew up on 2011's Blood Pressures refining their raw grit yet remaining true to their rock roots. The same is goes for Ash & Ice. I love the way their voices compliment each other's and the way they harmonize...I can't put my finger on it...it's just a deep, pure sound that Alison and Jamie create. When you listen to The Kills there's a sense that they are meant to be, I can't explain it...but...you can hear it, especially on "Echo Home."

If I had to pick a standout track it'd have to be "Doing It To Death" but track for track this a standup album. Feels good to have The Kills back! They'll  be back on the road again soon too, celebrating 15 years of rockin' and rollin'!

#3 Deap Vally - Femejism

Lindsey and Julie have always rocked and I dare say they rock harder on their sophomore album, Femejism.  They met in a knitting class, started playing music together and having been rocking the music scene since their 2011 debut. Last Year, the duo's drummer, Julie toured while pregnant with her first child and they were working on the new album! Now she has a baby and as of September 16th, we have their new album! Femejism is grittier with heavy garage rock influences and less greasy blues but that appeal is still there just not as prominent as it was on Sistrionix.

With big, confident guitar riffs, plenty of fuzzy reverb, coarse vocals and galloping drums, this album will bring you back to "Doll Parts" by Hole days,  it has that sort of 1990's grunge feel.
"Baby Beauty Queen" and "Teenage Queen" are at the top of my favorite track list off this badass album from a couple of badass women.

                              #4 The Lumineers - Cleopatra

The Lumineers finally followed up their crazy successful self-titled debut four years later with "Cleopatra" on April 8th! It took a few listens for this album to really resonate: it has the acoustic friendly, indie-folk sound that The Lumineers do so well but it's missing that sparkling optimism we heard on the first album.Cleopatra is a bit sadder, like someone in the band went through a breakup, the album carries that sort  heaviness.  The first single "Ophelia" probably has the biggest optimistic spirit with a chorus that  invites you to sing along in the same way that the chorus of "Ho Hey" does. I love the melancholiness in the lyrics of title track, "Cleopatra" and Cleopatra as a whole ended up making it to my last after a little tender listening.

Songs
Not all of these are necessarily my favorite songs or singles of 2016 but there's no denying that they were some of the hottest tracks of the year!

Bang Bang - Green Day = Green Day is back with a BANG in the best way! With whirling guitars and rolling drums this song is fast the way a good punk song should be! It's one to be listened to loud and that's exactly what I do every time it comes on the radio! It's great to have these local punks back in action! I love the Beastie Boy's, "Sabotage"- esque music video for it too!

GUCCI COOCHI - Die Antwoord = The weirdness of Die Antwoord that captured weirdo's hearts   has slowly been fading away but GUCCI COOCHI is dark, fuzzy, flirty and not as ravey as some of their other new stuff. And it features Dita VonTease so...that's awesome and hot!

Me Too - Megan Trainer = Learning  to love myself isn't easy but this song helps!
Totally my #1 guilty pleasure of the year and it's great for any workout playlist!

Can't Stop the Feeling - Justin Timberlake = The hot single from the Trolls soundtrack quickly became the song of Summer of 2016 and heck, it could easily be the song of the year! You can't help but smile, sing and shake your groove thang when you hear this song, am I right?! Forget the suit and tie, Justin Timberlake brought sexy back with this pop sensation!

We The People... - A Tribe Called Quest = EIGHTEEN YEARS. That's the last time A Tribe Called Quest released new music and their sixth studio album, We Got It From Here...Thank You For Your Service, couldn't have come at a better time. "We The People..." is the first song off the album to get air-play.

HandClap - Fitz and the Tantrums = I'm honestly so sick of this song. It has saturated the radio (alternative, contemporary, and top 40 stations alike), commercials and fitness studios since it's release but it is good to see this band getting to revel in success.

Blood in the Cut - K-Flay = The Bay Area's K-Flay is finally getting regular airplay with the uniquely catchy "Blood in the Cut" off her 2016 EP Crush Me and I couldn't be happier for this Stanford grad! It's a totally solid girl-power anthem!

Work - Rhianna feat. Drake  = This song got a lot of flack when it hit the airwaves earlier this year for being hard to understand (fans and critics alike would later learn Rhi-Rhi derived lyrics from a an English-based creole language called Jamaican Patios). Like it or not, it is another hit single from Rhianna. Just like a job, sometimes I like this song and sometimes I don't.

Starboy - The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk = I don't really care for this song but a lot of people do! Like Fitz and The Tantrums' Handclap this song has been everywhere all year! I didn't really care for the last Daft Punk single,  "Get Lucky" either but regardless of what I like, the DJ duo know how to make a hit. Daft Punk's hand in this song played a role in making The Weeknd a (bigger) star.

Shows
(this one goes to 11)
Needless to say this list was not easy to compile and just because the shows that didn't make the list doesn't mean they weren't great: CHVRCHES with Wolf Alice, Cage the Elephant opening for Metallica AND headlining at the Bill Graham Civic, How to Dress Well & Bishop Briggs at Mezzanine, The Heavy at The Independent, Young the Giant at The Fox Theater, Oakland, The Head and The Heart at The Greek...I'm talking' about you!

Sleigh Bells @ Mezzanine 11/16/2016

#1 Sleigh Bells at Mezzanine 11/16/2016
If you read my review of Sleigh Bells at Mezzanine in November you know how excited I was to cover that show! Alexis came down with laryngitis the night before their first of two scheduled shows at The Independent, however; instead of canceling both shows they merged both shows into one and moved it to Mezzanine on November 16th! How badass it that!?!
The front woman wasn't 100% but it didn't matter  because Sleigh Bells still blew the roof off the place with an  amazing, full throttle set!

#2 The Lumineers at Great American Music Hall 12/6/2016
I caught their set at Bottle Rock Napa Valley but it doesn't get much better than getting to see The Lumineers in such an intimate setting. It may have been radio station show but they didn't phone it in!

Snoop Dogg @ The Fox Theater 12/12/2016

#3 Snoop Dogg at The Fox Theater Oakland 12/12/2016
I saw the Dogg Father at a festival a few years ago but again, one off shows are always better and this was SNOOP DOGG at The Fox! He played all the hits and Warren G joined him on stage for a couple songs! Be still my hip-hop heart.
If you would have told my high school self that I'd see these legends share a stage at a show I wouldn't have believed you. I'm thrilled to cross this one off my show bucket-list!

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros @ The Independent 4/11/2016

#4 Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros at The Independent 4/11/2016
The first big band I was approved to cover of 2016! Great, spirited set from this oddball group of gypsies at the sold-out show.

#5 At The Drive In at The Warfield
One of my friends, a lovely lady who I admire a lot, was in town and had an extra ticket for At The Drive In and asked me if I wanted to go. It was so cool to see At The Drive In on their come back tour with one of my favorite people from the side of the stage! Cedric had crazy energy and their die-hard fans ate it up at the sold-out show!

#6 Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park August 9th, 10th, 11th
It doesn't matter who's playing, Outside Lands is always one of my favorites! I'm so grateful to be on the colorful team of vendor coordinators, working alongside Mitch this Summer in The Forrest learning how to put up fencing and scrim plus so much more.
Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, Third Eye Blind, Peaches, Big Freedia and Major Lazor were some of my favorite sets but being a vendor coordinator and working with that team is by far my favorite highlight of OSL.

#7 Green Day headlining Not So Silent Night at Oracle Arena 12/10/2016
Green Day's headlining set at LIVE105's Not So Silent night was amazing. The Bay Area proud band  were on fire, playing classics, hits from American Idiot and new stuff. Billie Joe made a touching tribute to the victims and survivors and everyone effected by the deadly Ghostship fire in Oakland, playing "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" in their honor. He brought a boy on stage to preform with them and the kid blew everyone away with his bass playing skills, including the front man himself who let the kid keep the bass guitar! It was a stellar set from some of the best punks around. It's like Green Day never left.

#8 WEEZER at The Shoreline 7/31/2016
I was giddy with excitement when I got invited to this show and I'm not even a huge WEEZER fan!  I'm not familiar with their new stuff but they played "My Name is Jonas" and "Say It Ain't So" and that's all I needed.

#9 The Kills at The Fox Theater Oakland
I love The Kills. I love The Fox. Ash & Ice is one of my favorite albums of the year so seeing The Kills  perform songs off their new album live at The Fox was awesome!

Florence and The Machine @ Bottlerock Napa 5/28/2016
#10 BottleRock Napa Valley 2016 & Treasure Island Music Festival Day 2
This was my first time at BottleRock: perfect weather + wine + Florence and the Machine + Red Hot Chili Peppers + The Lumineers + Deap Vally + K-Flay + Diego's Umbrella + with one of my best friends = great festival experience!
I'm sad to see Treasure Island Music Fest go but I am happy I was there for at least one of the days of it's 10th and final year. I had a fun time experiencing my first Fest in the rain and got to see the two bands I wanted to see: Sylvan Esso and Purity Ring!

#11 Metallica at AT&T Park 2/6/2016 & Metallica at The Fox Theater Oakland 12/17/2016
Book ending the year with seeing Metallica is reason enough to squeeze these shows on my Best Shows of 2016 list.

Top shows of 2022

1. Harry Styles 11/15/2022 @ The Forum

Harry Styles released Harry's House, his third solo album last Spring to whichto a very warm welcome. Then the sprightly British musician/actor/heart throb took his show on the road, spreading his love to everyone, everywhere.
What's not to love about that?!

Hands down, Harry Styles' Love on Tour show at The Forum on November 15th, 2022 is the number one best show I saw last year.

I couldn't believe and still can't believe that I managed to get up close (and I wish personal) in the pit. I had already seen him perform "As It Was" at Coachella so I wasn't heart broken that I missed it that night and I spotted Olivia Wilde in the midst of adoring fans!
The crowd engagement!
The stage design!
The band!
Harry's swiveling hips!
He played everything I could have wanted to hear from the new album as well as his first two albums.
Seeing Harry Styles live on his Love on Tour tour was everything you could imagine it would be, tenfold.

The only thing I would have changed is the thousands of screaming fans drowning out his singing.

2. Yeah Yeah Yeahs 10/6/2022 @ The Hollywood Bowl

As soon as I found out the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were playing The Hollywood Bowl on about this show I had to be there and thanks to a co-worker friend for hooking it up I was!

Karen O looked and sounded stunning and it was so good to see the three of them back on stage again. We got closer and closer and closer still as the show went on and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs played all of the hits we were dying to hear.

The opening acts that night, The Linda Lindas and Japanese Breakfast, rounded out an all Asian female line up which was pretty fucking cool.

Hopefully the trend setting Yeah Yeah Yeahs front woman spawned another trend there. We guessed that they'd have more on store for us this year and we were right, Yeah Yeah Yeahs 2023 tour dates have been annouced!

3. Lady Gaga 9/10/2022 @ Dodger Stadium

From her gaggle dancers and choreographed dancing, to all of the costume changes and stage changes, pryotechnics and routaiting vibes as one album to the next came to life on stage.
Did it feel like she was phoning it in? A little but it's Lady fucking Gaga.

Little monsters and their insurmountable energy filled dodger stadium with wigs, eye catching lewks, love and excitement. Cuties around me belted along with "Born This Way" which moved me to happy tears and I wouldn't want it any other way.

4. Florence and The Machine 10/14/2022 @ The Hollywood Bowl

While I do love seeing me some Florence and the Machine live I have come to realize I am captivated more so by her than by her music. Florence did not disapoint night one of two at The Greek. They closed out their 2022 tour with two sold-out shows at The Greek Theater. On night one I was surprised and delightedthat  "Dog Days are Over" was played early on.

She emerged to stage covered with white and black chandelers in one of her now signature, long, flowy frocks and long flowing red hair and the crowd lost it.
 AND THAT VOICE.

Before the third song she had already got off of the stage and onto the walkway that goes through the pit and seated area. She put on a flower crown a fan handed her as she passed, undoubtedly making their day as well as everyone else's who she sauntered past that night

5. The Kills 6/6/2022 @ The Mayan

Last year Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart of The Kills played shows for the first time since 2019. After opening for Mosshart's Dead Weather bandmate Jack White in the greater Bay Area on June 5th they headed to LA for two shows at The Mayan on June 6th and a second show added by popular demand on June 7th before going on to play a couple shows in New York.
I had to be at one of these shows.

The Kills @ The Mayan 6/6/2022

It was my first time at The Mayan and nearly five years since the last time I saw The Kills live. I could hardly wait for them to take the stage.   Sharing the same sentiment, they expressed gratitude for being back playing live shows not just for fans but with fans post lockdowns.
There were a couple technical hiccups and rusty performance moments where you could tell the duo was getting back in the groove of live shows again. It was a reminder that rockstars are human too and they rocked! 2022 Marked the twentieth anniversary of the release of their second album, No Wow and they played at least one song from all of their five albums.
Is more coming from The Kills this year?

6. Sylvan Esso @ Electric Forest 2022

Last year saw the return of a festie favorite, Electric Forest in Rothbury Michigan. The String Cheese Incident, Griz and Clozee brought the wook-ery while Sylvan Esso brought the indie-dance vibes. The dreamy electro-pop duo stayed busy during the pandemic releasing new music then promptly going on  tour as soon as things started to re-open. They seemed a little burned out on stage, Amelia mustering some of her signature wiggles and kicks here and there while Nick stayed hidden in fog machine fog.

I found myself closer than the fans riding the rails, alone in the photo pit dancing my heart out with my co-workers who got stopped by security watching me go.
It was like a private Sylvan Esso show just for me.

In true Electric Forest fashion, it was magical.

7. Elton John 11/20/2022 @ Dodger Stadium

November 20th, 2022 Elton John played his final show in the US at Dodger Stadium.  If I'd have seen more of the show it'd be higher on my list but alas work kept me from seeing most.  I heard it though. The top of the set was filled with hits: opening with "Bennie and the Jets" he kept the party going with "Philidelphia Freedom", "Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues", "Tiny Dancer" and "Rocket Man". Being a long time fan of Marilyn Monroe and her story myself, when his tribute to the misunderstood beauty "Candle in the Wind" being able to catch him perform it was perfection.

There was an abundance of feather boas, sequence and oversized bedazzled sun glasses in the crowd at the sold-out stadium show, the same stadium he played back in 1975 with that infamous rhinestone encrusted Dodgers uniform. Hits also closed the show with hits of course, including "Crocodile Rock" and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting". The last song of his final show in the US on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour was of course, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".

8. Dua Lipa @ Firefly 2022

It's a rare occasion if a whole team at a music festival can watch a set together but me and the hospo crew made it a point to watch Dua Lipa close out Firefly 2022 in Dover Delaware. If there's one thing I love more than a team photo it's a team outting at a show and this is one of the best fest sets I've ever seen.

Dua Lipa @  Firefly 2022

Dua didn't need extra thrills to spice up her set. Surrounded by an army of male and female dancers, she performed all of her hits with a graceful swagger and uber confidence that carried the show and made you want to keep watching. The big moon balloons that got tossed around during Levitate and blasts of confetti that showered the crowd to end the festival were added bonuses. There is no denyinh that Dup Lipa is hot and her shining genuineness through out her perfmance made her and her set to close out Firefly 2022 even hotter.

9. Bikini Kill 4/26/2022 @ Pappy & Harriet's

Between working Coachella and Stagecoach last year, I got a last minute invite to Bikini Kill at Pappy and Harriet's in Pioneertown. Not only had I been wanting to see Bikini Kill, seeing a show at Pappy and Harriet's was high on my list, too plus there was an extra ticket and it'd be with great company. So a show between shows? Yes please.
Arriving fashinably late, we went in through the back entrance and headed toward the noise and the crowd.

Bikini Kill @  Pappy & Harriet's 4/26/2022

Pappy and Harriet's has two stages, one indoor and one outdoor and Bikini Kill was playing outside. We caught a couple songs of their regular set before playing some songs for their encore, saving the best for last, their most well known single, "Riot Girl". If there's one song to see Bikini Kill play live it's "Riot Girl" and we saw it! First time seeing Bikini Kill as well as the first time at Pappy and Harriet's made for a great night even if we only caught the tail end of the show.

10. Pussy Riot 8/7/2022 @ Outside Lands 2022

Day three of Outside Lands welcomed Pussy Riot to the Panhandle stage at Outside Lands last summer. It was a beautful sun shiny day in Golden Gate Park when Pussy Riot took the stage. The righteous feminist activist group from Russia has windeled down from 11+ members to a solid handful with Nadya Riot at the helm.

Bandmates donned the signature Pussy Riot ski masks while Nadya's long Billie Eilish-esque locks blew in the Summer breeze. The front lady of the provocative punk band wore arosing fishnets, thigh high pink leather boots and an oversized T-shirt which she later shed on stage to reveal a more revealing outfit, if you can call it an outfit. While shedding said T-shirt she made it clear that it stated Free Brittney Griner. A protest of you will and very apropos.

Her vocal range from modestly incocent singing to diaphragmatic scream sining was surprisingly impressive. Ski masked dancers suggestivly danced on either side of her as she worked the crowd with silky movements, death stares and dominating attention from the crowd like a domanatrix with props like a long red whip. And of course there was political banter. Aside from freeing Brittney Griner, Nadya Riot also comented on Russia's attacks on Ukraine and a woman's right to choose in the US.

It wouldn't be a proper Pussy Riot show without some political banter, right? Nadya Riot delivered on all fronts.

As 2023 tour annoucements and fesival line-ups keep coming we're looking forward to a year full of live music. What's on your must see list this year?

Goodies from The Kills & The White Stripes

If there's been a void in your rock N roll fill lately, have no fear.

The Kills and The White Stripes announced that they will be releasing a compilation album of b-sides and a greatest hits album (respectively) in December.

Joy to the world!

The White Stripes Greatest Hits

October 5th Kills announcement of Little Bastards, a remastered compilation of b-sides and rarities from 2002-2009, to be released on December 11th.

October 7th The White Stripes announced via Third Man Records that they're set to release their first ever official anthology of recordings...AKA The White Stripes greatest hits on December 4th!

The Kills have five albums in their catalog to date:

- Keep Your Mean Side
- No Wow
- Midnight Boom
- Blood Pressures
- Ash & Ice

According to the announcement about Little Bastards, the collection of b-sides will come from their first three albums.

The Kills,  Little Bastards

It has been 13 years since The White Stripes' last album, Icky Thump.
While Jack White has been busy with his solo work, The Dead Weather (his side project with The Kills' Alison Mosshart on lead vocals), The Raconteurs and Third Man Records, we haven't heard too much from or about The White Stripes.

According to The White Stripes Instagram account, which was just created around the same time as the announcement of their upcoming greatest hits album, the collection will include 26 songs and is titled My Sister Thanks You and I Thank You: The White Stripes Greatest Hits.
It is available for pre-order on CD, double LP and digital as of now.

The White Stripes Greatest Hits track listing

After it was part of Jack's impromptu performance on SNL a couple of weeks ago, it's been confirmed that "Ball and Biscuit" is on the greatest hits track list. Apparently more tracks will be announced leading up to the release, so keep your eyes for that.

These October treats are kind of tricky since we have to wait until December to enjoy them. They are something to look forward to though!

Musicians supporting masks to save lives & music

These last few weeks have really been an eye opener in so many ways.
It's easy to see that it's not cheap to live a healthy life here in the United States. All you have to do is go to a grocery store and compare the organic to non-organic prices. Items on the McDonald's dollar value menu are cheaper than most store bought food and a lot more accessible to those living in low income communities. Furthermore, fast-food chains like devout Southern Baptist owned and operated Chic-Fil-A promote homophobia and the Christian run In & Out has shown their support for Trump by donating thousands of dollars to him over the years. We all know now what Trump supports but can everyone afford not to support these businesses?

As our country started reopening, the whole world saw a serge of COVID-19 cases across America simply because Americans refuse to wear masks. And the people who don't wear masks aren't getting tested for COVID-19 until it's too late (ie: they've gone around spreading their germs because they continue to go out with out a mask on not knowing they're infected therefore infecting other people).

Did you know that the poor and minority communities are at greater risk? Not just of COVID-19 but every disease, especially infectious ones. Think about it. Health care, access to healthy food and clean drinking water, good living conditions/environments, those all cost money. Add being diagnosed, hospitalization, medication and everything that comes along with getting sick when you're poor, broke, struggling, unemployed, homeless...

Some people can't afford to buy a mask, provide their family with masks or wash their mask regularly and some people can but refuse not to (did someone say, privileged?).

Now think about systemic racism. If you're a poor minority in the United States how do you get ahead and take care or yourself? How do we take care of these communities when the infrastructure in which we live doesn't want to take care of them? One of the easiest things to do right now, to help them against COVID-19, is to wear a mask.

Last week musicians like, Fiona Apple, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Bon Iver, Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells, Cat Power, TV On The Radio, Fleet Foxes, Dirty Projectors and more started voicing their support for the Noise For Now + Seeding Sovereignty campaign.

Noise For Now links touring musicians, promoters and local reproductive rights organizations in cities across the country and Seeding Sovereignty is an Indigenous womxn led collective working to shift social and environmental patterns from colonial institutions to Indigenous practices created in synchronicity with the land.

A note from Noise For Now: "COVID-19 has exposed our country's chronic systemic injustices; rates of infection are rising in overburdened Indigenous communities who lack PPE, healthcare, running water and food. Meanwhile, politicians have used the pandemic to impose state-level restrictions on abortion access and forced temporary health center closures, making it even more difficult for many families to access care. This disproportionately impacts people with low incomes, people of color, and those living in extremely rural communities.

Here's how you can help: for every purchase of a Noise For Now + Seeding Sovereignty mask or bandana, one mask will be donated to Seeding Sovereignty's Indigenous Impact Community Care Initiative for distribution to COVID-19 impacted Pueblos and reservations. Their masks and bandanas are sustainably made by Suay Sew Shop and can be purchased at noisefornow.org/shop.
Cash donations will also be made to Seeding Sovereignty's mutual aid and abortion funds that serve Indigenous and undocumented people."

Do you like live music? Do you enjoying going to concerts? Would you like to go to a concert at your favorite local music venue when it's safe to do so? The longer people do not wear masks, the longer the lock down will last. Concerts are one of few things in the last phase of re-opening and they were one of the first things to go at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The longer music venues stay closed the less likely it is they will re-open when they're allowed to do so (and when tours resume).

Music venues are experiencing upwards of 90% revenue loss and will be closed well into 2021 due to safety concerns posed by large social gatherings. This effects the entire music eco-system: artists, talent agents, bookers, tour managers, artist managers, venue managers, venue staff, stage hands, security, catering, artist hospitality, tour bus industry, production, radio/social media/TV/print advertising, record companies and so many more have been un-employed for 4 months with no end in sight.

How can you help?
1. wear a mask
2. contact your Senators and Representatives and let them know you support NIVA
(National Independent Venue Association)

Don't know who your Senators or Reps are or what to say? Go to www.saveourstages.com, put in your info and they do ALL of the work for you: find your Senators and Representative, generate the email and send the email. They provide you with phone numbers to call, too!

It's as easy as wearing a mask.

masks designed by The Kills

Speaking of masks and NIVA, rock N roll duo The Kills have designed masks! All  proceeds from sales of masks by The Kills go to NIVA and the #saveourstages initiative which is helping to save independent music venues around the country who are struggling to keep their venues from permanent closer!

Good news is that The Kills started selling their masks last week on their website www.thekills.tv and are already sold-out! More good news is that more masks from The Kills to support NIVA and #saveourstages will be on-sale again soon.
In the mean time, keep fighting the good fight by wearing a mask, sending emails and making calls to save our stages. There's also NIVA merch for sale that helps their cause, too.
I'd love to see you at show someday!

Rock N Roll Scream Queens

There's no doubt about it, I'm a rock N roll girl at heart and the louder it is, the better!
As a girl in a man's world  it's truly inspiring when female lead singers in the male dominate rock genre aren't afraid to let out a good, deep scream or growl.
With Halloween right around the corner, I'm dedicating this blog post to my favorite, badass, rock N roll scream queens.

From garage indie-rock duo, The Kills to the bluesy/psychey alt-garage rock supergroup The Dead Weather, front lady Alison Mosshart rocks hard! Don't let her slim stature and reserved demeanor off stage trick you because the way this chick wails is quite a treat!

Fluctuation in pitch, volume and the way she delivers lyrics characterize Mosshart's distinctive  vocal range  in both bands but more so in The Dead Weather.
2009 introduced us to her darker new sound with The Dead Weather's debut, Horehound and while there's no ignoring the domineering, brash  attitude that demands attention throughout the album, she really got comfortable with her new found voice on 2010's Sea of Cowards.
Stand out tracks from the albums which highlight her howling include: "60 Feet Tall", "Hang You From The Heavens", "New Pony", "Die By The Drop", "Gasoline" and "Jawbreaker".  She is a force to be reckoned with on stage and the rawness that Alison brings to every song live will blow your mind!
It was worth the 5 year wait for The Dead Weather's third album, Dodge and Burn, released on September 25th. Now the wait begins to see the solid rock act's new material live and of course to see and hear Alison in action!

Sleigh Bells @ Treasure Island Music Fest 2013

Sleigh Bells' Alexis Krauss has a killer Bronx-ified Rock-a-billy style and a set of lungs that are as good as her looks. Her coarse vocals lace the band's bratty, rowdy, Noise Pop tracks before slapping you with solid, sometimes shrill, hollers as heard on "Riot Rhythm", "Infinity Guitars", "Demons", "Bitter Rivals" and "Sing Like A Wire" (to name a few).
New music from Sleigh Bells is likely heading our way soon! On June 18th Krauss thanked show goers for making ti to their set at the Northside Festival state, "next time we're on stage it will be with new music."

Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs has wicked, signature style and. . . "grace". Gone are the days with her one of a kind band, guzzling bubbly then spewing it onto fans and deep throating her microphone  now that she's a mom but we'll always have the memories. Her edgy sound had dullified a bit since the 2003 YYY's breakout debut LP, Fever To Tell: the Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack is lovely and so is her solo work but it's just not the same Karen O, ya know?

Chalk full of yelling, screaming, grunting and groaning, Fever To Tell (more like Fever to Yell) doesn't come close to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs EP, Master.

Alice Glass once led Canada's now dismembered Crystal Castles and though inaudible most of the time, the manic, house infused electropop duo remain one of my favorites from that genre.

About every two years after their 2008 self titled debut they released an album and each one was riddled with Glass' piercing screeches. Thrashing around the stage as harsh strobe-lights blinded  dancing crowds, Crystal Castle's live shows were always intense ones and she always stole the show.

Halloween time is my favorite time of the year! Not only is the season changing, but there's treats in store, a reason to dress up in a costume and it's the month of "Roc-tober", which is a treat in itself if you enjoy going to shows!
If you and your ghouls don't have Halloween plans get tickets to LIVE105's Scream Scene with Awolnation, Passion Pit and more October 29th & 30th at The Masonic OR Heartbreak Halloween with IAMSU!, Sage the Gemini and more on October 31st at The Warfield!
Happy hauntings!

Being in a band you can wear whatever you want, it's like an excuse for Halloween everyday.
